Magnesium Sulphate

Specifications of Magnesium Sulphate

Chemical Name: Magnesium Sulphate Molecular Formula: MgSO₄
Molecular Weight:  120.37 g/mol CAS Number: 10034-99-8

Magnesium sulphate is an inorganic salt widely used in agriculture (as a magnesium and sulfur fertilizer), medicine (e.g., treatment for eclampsia, muscle relaxants, electrolyte replenishment), and in bath salts for muscle relaxation. Its magnesium content supports vital biological functions. The heptahydrate form (Epsom salt) is the most common and historically familiar form.

Appearance: White, odorless crystalline solid or powder

Solubility: Highly soluble in water and solubility increases with temperature (e.g., ~269 g/L at 0 °C to ~502 g/L at 100 °C)

Melting Point:  1124°C

Magnesium sulfate provides a source of elemental magnesium (about 20.19% by weight in the anhydrous form) and sulfur, both essential nutrients. Used as a dietary magnesium supplement for correcting magnesium deficiency.

The benefits of Magnesium Sulphate include:

  • Treating constipation: Magnesium sulphate acts as a natural osmotic laxative by increasing water retention in the intestines, softening stools and promoting bowel movements, typically working within 30 minutes to six hours after oral intake.

  • Relieving muscle tension and pain: It can be absorbed through the skin via baths (Epsom salt), helping to relax muscles, reduce inflammation, alleviate joint stiffness and muscle spasms, and improve range of motion.

  • Promoting relaxation and reducing stress: Magnesium sulfate baths may support relaxation and stress reduction, partly due to magnesium’s role in neurotransmitter production related to sleep and calmness, although some benefits may arise from warm bath effects themselves.

  • Decreasing bloating and water retention: It can help remove excess fluids and salts through reverse osmosis, potentially reducing swelling and edema tied to inflammation.

  • Supporting blood sugar and metabolic health: Magnesium deficiency is associated with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and heart disease, and magnesium sulfate supplementation may aid in stabilizing blood sugar and improving metabolic functions.

  • Neuroprotection and managing seizures: Magnesium sulfate is used medically to prevent and treat seizures in conditions like eclampsia by blocking neuromuscular transmission and protecting neuronal function.

  • Respiratory support: Intravenous or nebulized magnesium sulfate can be used in severe asthma attacks to relax bronchial muscles and reduce inflammation, aiding breathing.

  • Cardiovascular benefits: It may assist in vasodilation (widening blood vessels), improving blood flow and controlling certain arrhythmias.
