Zinc Gluconate

Specifications of Zinc Gluconate

Chemical Name: bis(D-Gluconato-O1,O2)zinc
Molecular Formula:  C12H22O14Zn
Molecular Weight: 455.7 g/mol CAS Number: 4468-02-4

Zinc Gluconate is the zinc salt of gluconic acid, consisting of zinc combined with two gluconate anions. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water. Zinc gluconate is widely used as a dietary mineral supplement to provide zinc, an essential trace element important for many biological processes including immune function, antioxidant activity, and skin health

Appearance: White to off-white or slightly yellowish powder or granules, crystalline in some forms

Solubility: Soluble in water (about 100 g/L at 20 °C); practically insoluble in ethanol and methylene chloride

Melting Point: 172-175 °C

Zinc gluconate contains about 14.3% elemental zinc by weight. For example, a typical zinc gluconate tablet providing 185.6 mg of zinc gluconate delivers approximately 25 mg of elemental zinc. Higher strength tablets may contain more elemental zinc, such as 50 mg per tablet (from ~350 mg zinc gluconate) or others around 76 mg zinc gluconate, depending on the product

The benefits of Zinc Gluconate include:

  • Enhanced immune function: Zinc gluconate supports the immune system by regulating immune cell activity and production, helping fight infections and possibly reducing the duration and severity of colds.

  • Wound healing: Zinc plays a critical role in collagen synthesis, cell division, and tissue repair, so supplementation can speed healing of wounds, cuts, and skin injuries.

  • Skin, hair, and nail health: Zinc is important for protein and DNA synthesis in skin and hair follicles. Zinc gluconate may reduce acne, decrease skin inflammation, regulate oil production, and strengthen nails.

  • Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects: It helps reduce bacterial growth related to acne and soothes skin inflammation.

  • Support for cognitive function and eye health: Zinc’s antioxidant properties may protect eye health and mitigate age-related macular degeneration, and it supports brain health.

  • Potential benefits for blood sugar regulation and heart health: Zinc may improve insulin sensitivity and help manage blood sugar levels, and there is some evidence it could reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

  • Alleviation of symptoms in certain digestive disorders: Zinc gluconate can help restore zinc levels impaired in conditions like Crohn’s and celiac disease, addressing related symptoms.
